Windbreakers & Jackets

A good golf jacket has always had a job to do. It needs to move through the swing, handle changing weather and avoid the stiff, bulky feel common in other sports outerwear. That practical brief created some of the best vintage golf clothing around.

This collection includes vintage golf windbreakers, waterproofs, half-zips, pullovers and lightweight jackets from Nike Golf, adidas, PING, Callaway, TaylorMade, FootJoy and specialist outerwear names including Sunderland of Scotland.

Most pieces come from the 1980s through to the early 2000s, when golf jackets were designed for the course but often looked just as good away from it. Expect colour blocking, embroidered chest logos, contrast panels and relaxed shapes that work with golf trousers, denim, chinos or modern trainers.

What makes a vintage golf jacket different?

Older golf outerwear often stands out for straightforward construction and useful detailing. Raglan sleeves allow more room through the shoulder, mesh linings help with comfort, while deeper pockets, substantial zips and elasticated cuffs give many pieces a practical feel that still works today.

The fabrics are part of the appeal too. The collection moves from lighter wind-resistant shells to more substantial waterproof and lined jackets, with nylon, polyester and mixed constructions that can feel very different from one piece to the next. Earlier examples often have more weight and structure, while later 1990s and early 2000s pieces increasingly introduce lighter technical materials.

Look closely and the smaller details often tell the story: piping, contrast panels, embroidered logos, heavier zip pulls, lined collars, stitching and fabrics that still hold their shape decades later.

Vintage golf outerwear by brand

Nike Golf is one of the strongest parts of the collection. V-necks, crew necks, quarter-zips, pullovers and full-zip jackets range from understated Swoosh designs to Shield-logo pieces, Tiger Woods-era details and some of the best colour blocking of the period.

Browse them together in our Vintage Nike Golf Windbreakers collection, or explore the wider Vintage Nike Golf collection for polos, knitwear, gilets, caps and more.

Vintage adidas Golf, PING and TaylorMade outerwear brings its own character through panel work, embroidery and changing logo treatments, while FootJoy and Sunderland of Scotland are particularly well known for practical golf layers built around changing conditions.

How do vintage golf windbreakers and jackets fit?

Many older golf jackets were cut to layer over a polo, sweatshirt or knit, so they can fit more generously than modern performance outerwear. Raglan sleeves, wider bodies and longer cuts are common, particularly across pieces from the 1980s and 90s.

That does not mean every vintage jacket fits oversized. Cuts vary considerably between brands and periods, so it is worth checking the individual measurements rather than relying only on the size printed on the label.

How to wear vintage golf jackets now

These pieces do not need to be worn as full vintage looks. A roomy golf windbreaker can sit over a plain T-shirt or sweatshirt, while a lighter half-zip works with modern trousers, chinos or denim.

The easiest approach is to let one part of the jacket do the work. That might be the colour blocking, an embroidered chest logo, the shape of a V-neck or simply the weight and structure of the fabric.

For a more traditional combination, layer one over a vintage golf polo or mock neck. The best examples still feel rooted in golf, but they are not restricted to the course.

What we look for

We look for outerwear that best represents its brand and era: strong shapes, interesting fabrics, useful construction, great colour combinations and the small details that make one jacket stand apart from another.

Some pieces are understated and functional. Others have the bold panels, embroidery and generous proportions that immediately place them in 1990s golf. What matters is that there is a reason to bring the piece back into rotation.

We keep adding the best vintage golf windbreakers and jackets we can find, from practical weather layers to the pieces that look every bit as good away from the course.

Wear The Era.
